Peter's Net Zero Solar Home

Peter's Net Zero Solar Home - Tour 1

On September 1, 2015, Peter Darlington transformed his ordinary house into a net zero energy home. For two years in a row, Peter’s home produced slightly more energy that it consumed. This was achieved by installing a solar array on his garage roof and by reducing energy consumption through proper insulation, air-tightness, high-performing windows, as well as energy efficient lighting and appliances.

Some of the key features of Peter’s home include:

  • 10.2 kW grid-tied solar array
  • Air-source heat pumps (for air and hot water heating)
  • Heat recovery ventilation
  • Triple-glazed windows
  • Air tightness rating of 0.99 ACH50
  • Bidirectional ENMAX electrical meter

Since the renovations took place, Peter saved $4000 on his energy bills and prevented 24,000 lbs of CO2 from entering the atmosphere!

On September 22 and 23, Peter will be giving tours of his net zero energy home as part of Green Energy Doors Open ’17! Stop by anytime between 12pm and 5pm!
